A very interesting title. I know you are wondering where am I going on this one. In some of my post I take wild jumps and leaps. This one is kind of a you need to know the back story to get the title. If you know what I am talking about, I hope your laughing. So, I finished my first year of being a Principal. I had the added flavor of having a Kindergarten to 12th grade school. I will be writing posts in the future that will talk about what I have learned, but thought I would give just a glimpse of my roller coaster year. I came into the school with some thoughts and high hopes. I can't say I met all of my hopes or goals, but it wasn't all that bad. I did learn a lot. The biggest thing I learned was my love for Lutheran Schools. Not just my school, but for all of the Lutheran Schools. I got to present at the LEA convocation and looking forward to present next time. I got to start the year at a wonderful Principal conference and met Dave Black in person for the first time. Even though Dave and I will not see eye-to-eye on Baseball or Detroit Sport Team Greatness, he is someone that I can connect to and know will give a helping hand.
I think the hardest part of the year was and is my stubbornness. I was once told that I have a vision and I push toward that vision and sometimes forget about a few details on the way. I don't know if that is always a bad thing, but it is something that I do need to look at. I want to succeed so much, that I may ruffle some feathers along the way. Not that I do that intentionally, but I see making changes to make school the best for the students is the most important thing. I don't think it is about the teachers or the parents. Again, stubbornness is my kryptonite. But again I am Lutheran.
Keep articulating the vision for your school in every possible setting. You may still ruffle feathers along the way, but you won't blindside anyone unnecessarily.
