I agree with what they are doing and why they are doing as this Superintendent states:
"I think we were falsely under the impression that if I'm just a master of my subject matter I'm a good teacher," said Kentwood Superintendent Scott Palczewski. "You need buy-in from students. If you have a relationship and know someone cares about you, you work harder. You don't want to disappoint them."I can relate this to athletics, the best athletes do not automatically make them the best coaches. They may have knowledge of the sport, but may not be able to engage the players and lift them into the position to succeed.
But, COME ON! You became an educator to be with children all day long. As much of a head ache you could get, you knew what you were getting into. No one should have to tell you, you need to be caring and nice.
The cost of the three-day training is about $500 per teacher, according to the Capturing Kids' Hearts Web site$500 dollars! PER TEACHER! That is amazing.
What I do like about this program:
In today's world of fear that every teacher is a sexual predator, they are saying
you need to be there for your students. I have always felt, no matter what I think about a student, or how crazy they drive me sometime, I will always be there for them. I will always mentor them. Parents some time think I am crazy that I give my students my e-mail, cell phone, and home phone number. I always use Ron Clark as an inspiration to this method. Parents do not see sometimes the benefit a teacher can be to their child. A teacher sometimes sees the real child, as a child might hide or fake their feelings in front of their parents. This is where a good relationship all around is beneficial. Between the Student and Teacher, The Teacher and Parent(s), and of course The Child and Parent(s).Would you need to pay 500 dollars to learn how to be a human being? If you answer yes, maybe you should question, should you be in education?

Gee, the story here, to me, is not that the workshop cost $500 for three days, but that the content is THIS content! Investing in teacher growth, new methods, new materials, new technologies and workshops to improve teaching strategies makes good sense, even for $500... but learning to "relate" to students???? com on!
